Roz Robinson has always had a passion for designing and creating. Over the years she has designed her own wedding dress, furniture, soft furnishings and interior décor. Her house has always been the envy of her friends for its utterly unique, colourful décor. Roz, whose day job is working as a research scientist, began designing her own fabrics when she had kids, and was uninspired by the soft furnishings and other fabric items she found in the shops.
"I have two daughters, and so much of what you buy commercially is either extremely garish or boring. I love colour and I love things to be bright and jolly, so I decided to create my own funky and fun designs that appeal to my kids as well as look great in my living room."
Roz began printing her fabrics through her membership of Spoonflower.com, but it quickly became clear that other members of Spoonflower loved the designs too. It was over a glass of wine and a Chinese takeaway with an old university friend that the idea for a business came about. Sarah Campbell, who describes herself as ‘the practical business half’, felt passionately that these designs were more than just good, they were truly unique and that there would be a wider audience for them. So these two friends, who met in 1997 living in the same block of student dorm rooms, created Catching Stars. After several months of product development and testing, they have launched the business, and are already selling through a number of retailers online.
Products and Design Inspiration
Roz and Sarah are building the Catching Stars brand based on the belief that design for kids should not only be bright and colourful, but that it should also appeal to adults too. With four kids between them, this is something Roz and Sarah believe from their own experience.
"We love colour and beautiful, interesting patterns. This is about creating beautiful play spaces in people's homes for both kids and their parents to enjoy."
They have so far launched a range of play teepees, baby play mats and cushions featuring woodland, poppy, butterfly and robot designs. Taking her inspiration from games and ideas that kids love, Roz also likes to build in fun games into some of her designs. Her poppy teepee design, for example features a ‘hunt the four leaf clover game’ on the inside pocket design, and dandelion puffs for making wishes on the floor mat.
More exciting designs and product areas are in development now, and Roz and Sarah have plans to expand further. They welcome any ideas for designs or products via their facebook page. We've been very fortunate to have been covered by some great blogs and publications:
"We also gave Kaspar a teepee for his birthday, back in February. It’s in our living room, and he loves to bring books, crayons, and toys inside and hang out in a space where he feels snug and a little separate, but can keep an eye – and ear – on the family-style action taking place around him. I think it’s important for him to have spaces like this in our home"
"Do you love Kaspar’s teepee? We do too! I got it from a wonderful, mom-run company, Catching Stars. Roz, its founder, wanted to create play spaces for her two daughters that inspired them, and that were colorful without being either too pink or too plastic (both common problems with mass-made toys for girls). Now she and her business partner Sarah – also a mom! – outfit other families’ homes with everything from play-mats to pillows that look amazing even in rooms grown-ups use. "
Mummy, Daddy and Me Makes Three
"Our first impression was just how colourful it was. The fabric is a gorgeous woodland decal with rabbits and deers all over it. It looks perfect in her new room."...
"Mads played in it for ages, snuggling in there under a blanket and watching a film, and also having a little picnic in there too."...
"Once the teepee arrived and I saw the quality of the material, the way it was made and the love and passion that had gone into the little details, I have to say that I find the price quite reasonable, especially when it comes with extras like the mat and the two cushions. I can see it being a special and favourite toy of ours for a long time to come"
